On the Relationship Between Dialect and Regional Culture Confidence

Language use in China is complex and dialects vary from region to region. The diversified dialects are carriers of regional cultures. Dialects not only represent regional cultures but also demonstrate their individual differences and development. In the process of modernization, dialects have been gradually marginalized and regional cultures weakened. Dialects and regional cultures have been labeled as"backward". The decline of dialects reflects the lack of regional culture confidence, which will further result in the absence of the sense of belonging and the cultural identity. Instead of "cultural inferiority" or "cultural conceit", we should have "cultural confidence" in dialects and regional cultures.
