On the Development of Cartography in Song Dynasty and Su Shi's Concern with Cartography

  • Owing to the large quntities of the printing maps and books of cartography, the Song Dynasty was the peak of the ancient Chinese cartography development. So the Song Dynasty scholars, including Su Shi, were very much concerned about the maps. Su Shi's attention to cartography mainly reflected in two aspects. On the one hand, Su Shi focused on Yugong to study cartography under the system of Confucian classics. On the other hand, Su Shi paid attention to the military value of the map in political practice.
