The Organic Unity Between Foreign Culture and Fluent Style in Translation: Based on the Translation of Red Sorghum

  • Mo Yan was awarded the "Nobel Prize in Literature" in 2012, and the English versions of his works played an essential part. Based on Howard Goldblatt's translation of Red Sorghum, the writer probes into his translation methods. Whether the specialty of Chinese culture can be accepted is a key measurement of its translation. On one hand, the translator exerts every effort to convey its "otherness". On the other hand, he also takes the "transparency" of translation into account. However, some words with "foreign flavor " are opaque because their cultural context are not fully explained. And in order to make the translation version "transparent", the translator deletes and changes some incidents of the original novel, but this method makes the figure of speech-irony disappear.
