Abstract:
This paper sorts out unknown cultural celebrities of Chengdu in modern times from a considerable amount of literature. They include Huang Ji'an, a master of playwriter of Sichuan opera; Ye Bohe, a prominent musician and musical educator; Ma Yifu, a master in Confucianism, Buddhism and philosophy and master in Chinese calligraphy; Huang Kan, a linguist and philologist; Zhang Yisun, a famous Tibetologist and editor of Tibeto-Chinese Dictionary; Zhou Taixuan, the founder of coelenterate research in China; Zhang Shengzang, an "all-knowing professor"; Ye Xinqing, a master-hand of embroidery; Pu Fuzhou, an expert of traditional Chinese medicine; Du Ziming, a contemporary luminary of orthopedics; and Dong Zhujun, one of the first generation of the most famous female entrepreneurs in China. The collection of their stories and antecedents is not only a valuable historical material to the academia, but also a precious "memory" of the society.
