Abstract: This paper argues that the definitions of Paihang and Hangdi in Ci Yuan are not only at variance with the general logic,but also confound the concepts. Hangdi refers to the rank from the elder to the younger within a generation,while Paihang refers to the rank among different generations. The paper also discusses the causes of the inaccuracy,and expounds some related issues of these concepts further.
