Abstract: In the English-speaking world, Japanese scholar Shigeyoshi Obata first and foremost produced the The Works of Li Po: the Chinese Poet, which is greatly influential and well-received. His Chinese complex is wholly witnessed in this version, being of translation and historical materials. His translating method of free-verse is taken from that of Ezra Pound, breaking away from the Chinese poetry rendering features of sinologists. In 1926, Chinese scholar Wen Yiduo had probed into translating affairs with Shigeyoshi Obata on The Works of Li Po: the Chinese Poet. And Shigeyoshi Obata responded to Wen's questioning. The main points of their translating debate are textual research of selecting poems, whether poetry can be rendered and the impact of translation to culture and literature, which still own guiding significance in poetry translation nowadays.
