Abstract:
The academic circle (including Chinese and Foreign-languages') looks a bit inactive to Cheng Yaotian, a famous Qing-Dynasty scholar, which is inconsistent with many halos upon his head. The author attempts to introduce his academic achievements (
The Derivation of Guo Luo as a main example), and to interpret the significance of his works to the present-day linguistic research, especially his explanation on the motivation of derivation, which provides a solid Chinese-style proof for iconicity proposed by Cognitive Linguistics and Embodied-cognitive Linguistics. The author would also like to take this opportunity to re-stress that the scholars in Foreign-languages' circle could not only stare at the foreigners and their works, but also study seriously the spiritual property left to us by our predecessors, so as to promote a more prosperous scenery of "making foreign things serve China, and ancient things the present".
