The Integration of Neo-confucianism Studies and Confucian Classics Studies: A New Trend of Late Ming ThoughtAn Investigation Centered on Huang Daozhou

Abstract: During the late Ming Dynasty, thinkers generally criticized and reflected on the Yang-ming study followers, leading to a new trend in the integration of Neo-confucianism Studies and Confucian Classics Studies. Huang Daozhou is an important representative figure in this academic transformation process. His academic characteristic is the integration of Neo-confucianism Studies and Confucian Classics Studies, advocating the use of the Six Classics to govern the world while not abandoning the tradition of using Neo-confucianism to govern the mind. From Huang Daozhou's academic life, it can be seen that the works of Neo-confucianism Studies and Confucian Classics Studies overlap, indicating that in his lifelong academic pursuits, both Neo-confucianism Studies and Confucian Classics Studies were always balanced. Even in a Q&A record focused on Neo-confucianism, such as Rongtan Wenye, it often involves content related to Confucian Classics Studies. From the perspective of Gongfu theory, the blending characteristics of Huang Daozhou's Neo-confucianism Studies and Confucian Classics Studies are reflected in a model of complementary and integrated unity in a loop. He believes that Gongfu is not a continuous upward movement, but a holistic form that takes into account both the front and back, and repeats itself in a loop. In other words, governing the world and governing the mind are both essential efforts and undertakings, and are always carried out through respect, integrating governing the world and governing the mind into one and achieving mutual success, thereby ensuring the long-term maintenance of the state of ultimate goodness.
