Abstract:
Is Australia a multicultural nation? As a scholar of Australian literature and cultural history, Professor David Carter in University of Queensland, argues that to some extent Australia is both more and less multicultural. In terms of demography, immigration patterns, language, settlement patterns and policy, the paper begins with five reasons why we should not consider Australia a multicultural nation. Then it replies with five reasons as to why we should still see Australia as multicultural nation. The author focuses on the impact of Australian polity on multiculturalism when referring to the five key elements about Australian multiculturalism. Finally, the author hopes to maintain and defend everyday multiculturalism in the current Australia in some way.
