Abstract:
Construction grammar believes that knowledge of a language is based on a collection of form and function pairings. Based on this theory, there-construction can be classified into existential there-construction and presentational there-construction. This paper searched, compared and analyzed all forms of there-construction in COCA, and found the rule that there be structure, positive structure and simple tense are the most frequently used structures, but at the same time, quite a few forms of there-structure that are grammatically acceptable but rarely seen in real case. Thus further validate that construction is based on a collection of form and function pairings and a whole is larger than the sum of parts.
